Dates: 12-14th July
Experience the transformation of human canvases into mythical and other-worldly creatures in this surreal annual festival. The World Bodypainting Festival, (WBF for short), is in its 21st year - drawing over 60 artists from over 50 countries worldwide, the affair is unquestionably one of a kind. The main event is a world class body painting competition featuring 6 categories - although prior to the grand finale workshops and side events take place over a week. WBF not only boasts bizarre and wonderful works of body painting art, the festival also features music, food, crafts, and accessories markets as well as fashion shows. The kids program includes creative activities for little ones, such as yoga, theatre, and DIY paint stations.
Situated in the historic city Klagenfurt of Austria, the main event takes place in the “Open Air Art Park”, where visitors can enjoy works of art amongst busy artists. Using body paint, costume, and makeup, artists slave away for up to 6 hours to bring ethereal entities to life. Nestled amongst the city’s delightful buildings such as an old theatre, gallery, and quaint cafés, the festival is a surreal and colourful experience. Highlights of WBF are not only limited to the competition - the “Body Circus” is an extraordinary ball which takes place in the magical Loretto Castle, and the end of the festival is celebrated with an “Aftershow Paint Party”.
Why should you go?
WBF is a totally unique experience - bodies are turned into new and bizarre entities through the art of body painting.
Klagenfurt itself is also a charming city to spend time in - there visitors can take pleasure in discovering historical landmarks and enjoy the city’s Italian architecture, as well as remnants of the Art Nouveau.
