Dates: prospective 28-30th Sep

Each year an unparalleled chance to get close to the largest marine creatures arises at Walker Bay, South Africa. The Hermanus Whale Festival welcomes thousands of visitors to the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus which sits atop the stunning Walker Bay, to raise awareness and celebrate the annual return of the Southern Rights. The Rights are the predominant species of whales to visit the shores of Hermanus, where they return to calve and attend to their young. It is thought that in 1935 when commercial whaling had been banned in the coastal village, the Southern Right whale population had plummeted to only 10-40 remaining whales. In contrast, by 2011, the population had been restored to 3500 whales.

The Hermanus Whale Festival now celebrated for close to 30 years, highlights local conservational and educational efforts that have been made to protect these gentle giants of the sea. The Southern Rights take centre stage during the eco-marine affair - offering visitors the chance to revel in whale watching from sea, shore, and even air! During the peak whale watching season, Walker Bay’s shores can expect to welcome over 200 whales.

Festivities also include an Eco-Marine Village Tent and talks, crafted goods, a street parade, and a treasure hunt for the little ones. Last year’s celebration saw local artists perform in a live music marquee, and “Whales & Wheels”, a classic car show. From local produce, scrumptious seafood, to a car show and live music, the family friendly festival really has it planned for all.

Why should you go?

An encounter with the magnificent creatures of the deep is a once in a lifetime experience.

Hermanus is renown for being an excellent spot for land whale watching. The Enviro-Arts festival is also the largest fiesta held on Cape Whale Coast - a mesmerising stretch of South African coastline just outside Cape Town that’s worth a visit in its own right. From wine routes, wineries, mountain biking trails, to golf courses, a weekend trip to visit the Whale Festival could turn into a week long escape exploring the remarkable coast!

Regal Travel’s team are on hand to organise that thing you’ve always wanted to do - why not give us a call or pop into one of our four branches?
