Dates: 20th - 23rd Sep (provisional)
Be a part of this colourful and historic free flight celebration in the scenic French Alps. Located in the small town of Saint Hilaire du Touvet, the annual event sees costume wearing participants take the skies above a striking green valley. For over 40 years the festival has shared the spirit of flight with the world - it all began in 1974 when three hang gliders took the plunge from Pré qui tue which literally translates to “meadow that kills”. Since then, the Coupe Icare has been going strong and growing each year.
The main attraction at Coupe Icare is of course the numerous flight competitions - more specifically the Masquerade Contest. Participants in every imaginable ensemble under the sun defy gravity - from unicorns and pterodactyls to sea creatures, the weird and wonderful rule. Prizes for this contest are no doubt awarded to the best costume, earning the festival’s bizarre yet colourful reputation. That being said, Coupe Icare is not only limited to bind blowing competitions. Other highlights include an international trade fair for professional air sports, a free flight film festival, live music, aerial workshops, demonstrations, and street shows. For the little ones, a children’s area is sure to please.
Why should you go?
Perfect for a family break, a visit to Coupe Icare is an experience beyond memorable for little ones and grown ups alike.
Whilst in a town as picturesque as Saint Hilaire du Touvet, it would be sacrilege not to have ridden the Funiculaire de Saint Hilaire. Established in 1917, a ride on the funicular railway (a kind of cable railway) offers its passengers mesmerising views. Additionally, why not go for a hike or enjoy the serenity of nature? If you would like to try your hand at free flight, there are a number of schools in the area that can help you get started.
Regal Travel’s team are on hand to organise that thing you’ve always wanted to do - why not give us a call or pop into one of our four branches?
