Celebrate the Thai new year in this festive water fight.

Songkran celebrates the Thai new year, it is an annual tradition steeped in symbolic customs. Temples are visited and food offerings are made to temple monks, water is splashed on each other to welcome the new year. Traditionally the splashing of water represented purification,  cleansing oneself of bad luck and as an offering of blessings, although over the years the water festival has become a national water fight. Everybody young or old takes part in this playful custom.

This traditional festival was originated in Chiang Mai - each year the old city transforms into an energetic fulcrum as celebrators await the lively water fights with anticipation. There is no better place to celebrate Songkran than in Chiang Mai amongst hundreds of intricate buddhist temples, fascinating rainforests, and gentle elephants.
